The Story of "Winged Inspiration"

Gene was sitting in a little sidewalk cafe on the Champs-Elysees when a young man tapped her on the shoulder.

"I am so sorry to disturb a famous star, but I must speak or my heart it will, how do you say, bust? I have here designs for gowns that would make me very happy for you to look upon. I would be honored..."

Gene, beguiled by his charm, smiled. "Why, of course. I'd love to see your portfolio. Please, join me for a cafe au lait?"

The young man excitedly fell into the chair opposite Gene and proceeded to take sketch after sketch from the folder he carried. Gene didn't have to say a word—her face told him everything.

"These are lovely—and I particularly like this one," Gene said.

"Miraculeux! I have made this one—I am inspired by the Winged Victory. It is in my salon and with a few slight alterations..."

"Then would you allow me to wear it to a reception I'm going to tonight at the Louvre? All I can offer you is my extra ticket."

"And the privilege of seeing you on the Daru Staircase in my creation in front of the statue that was its inspiration? M'am'selle Marshall—you have made the City of Lights even brighter!"

"Well, let's get to work tout de suite!" And, putting some francs on the table, Gene and her new designer friend hurried off to his salon.
